Canada should announce a new immigration plan soon
What will the government prepare this time?
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada issues an annual immigrant admission plan. Under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, this must happen before November 1 of each year.
The immigration plan is drawn up for three years at a time and is adjusted each year thereafter. Canada now welcomes newcomers under the 2022-2024 plan, while the plan for 2023-2025 is due out in November. The current immigration plan was not released until earlier this year. The delay was due to an unscheduled election in the fall of 2021. Now the government is working as usual.
The immigration plan reflects the targets for newcomers that Canada seeks to meet. In 2022, for example, the country intends to admit 431,645 immigrants.
According to the current plan, the goals for the coming years are as follows:
- 2023 — 447,500 people;
- 2024 — 451,000 people.
It is possible that these numbers will increase after the adjustment. For example, the 2021-2023 plan had a target of 411,000 newcomers in 2022 and 421,000 in 2023. In the 2022-2024 plan, however, the targets increased dramatically.
For the first half of 2022, Canada welcomed 231,625 people, more than 58% of the annual plan. It is possible that the plan will even be exceeded, as it was in 2021 when 405,000 immigrants were admitted instead of 401,000.
