Canadian province awaits immigrants to small and rural areas

A list of towns participating in the new immigration program has appeared.

This year, Alberta launched streams for immigrants who want to live and work in rural communities with populations under 100,000. One of the streams is for skilled professionals and the other is for entrepreneurs.

The main requirement of the rural stream for specialists is to get a job offer in one of the participating municipalities. However, the list of such towns was unknown. To date, 22 communities have been designated to participate in the stream:

  • City of Brooks (including Town of Bassano, County of Newell, Villages of Rosemary and Duchess);
  • City of Grande Prairie;
  • County of Grande Prairie (including Towns of Sexsmith and Wembley);
  • Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo;
  • Town of Innisfail;
  • Town of Taber (including Municipal District of Taber, Town of Vauxhall);
  • Town of Trochu;
  • Town of Whitecourt;
  • Municipal District of Smoky River (including Towns of Falher and McLennan, Villages of Donnelly and Girouxville);
  • Municipality of Jasper.

In addition, 37 communities now participate in a rural stream for entrepreneurs. Those wishing to open or purchase a business in a small town must visit it in advance. That way, the entrepreneur will see the place where they are to live and do business, and the local government can meet with the program participant and evaluate their business idea. For a list of towns for entrepreneurs with contacts of their representatives, see Alberta's official website.

"Rural Alberta provides a unique opportunity to leverage needed skills and talent newcomers and entrepreneurs hold, benefiting local economies and supporting community diversity," commented Paul McLauchlin, president of Rural Municipalities of Alberta.
