International students in Canada can pay less in tuition

The province of Quebec told who can study on preferential terms.

Education in Canada for international students is not the cheapest. In addition to the standard price, there are additional fees for immigrants, the need to pay for health insurance and more. In addition, the costs of newcomers include housing and settling in. As a result, the final amount a foreign student spends can be as much as $25,000 CAD.

The Province of Quebec is committed to helping immigrants in this matter. Several categories of students studying in this region are eligible for tuition benefits. They are exempt from the additional fees that apply to international students. These categories include:

  • French-speaking French and Belgian nationals studying in the province. Students pursuing a bachelor's degree pay the same amount as Canadian residents who do not live in Quebec. The fees for masters and doctorates are the same as those paid by Quebec residents. An important detail is the need to document that you are francophone. Students with dual Canada-France or Canada-Belgium citizenship are not eligible for this benefit;
  • students belonging to a country or international organization that has signed a reciprocal Student Mobility Agreement with Canada;
  • Refugees and persons in need of protection with a Quebec Certificate of Eligibility with RA or R8 code;
  • spouses and children (up to the age of 22) of temporary workers who have a work permit indicating the employer and the place of work in Quebec, or a work permit issued under the work permit program after graduation;
  • students attending colleges or universities located outside Montreal. They will have to complete a program of study in French in the employment sectors identified as priorities by the Quebec government, namely information technology, engineering, health and social services, education, and educational childcare services.

The final amount a student will need to pay depends on individual details. Nevertheless, it may be lower than for other foreigners by several thousand Canadian dollars.
