Canada promised to make it faster and easier to obtain permanent residency

The Department of Immigration is developing a new stream.

In 2021, there were eight months of simplified permanent resident status. People could not leave Canada because of restrictions related to the pandemic, so the decision was made to expedite the change of status. 90,000 people who had worked and studied in Canada were granted permanent residency in less than a year, even though they had expected to wait years.

In May 2022, the House of Commons required the Department of Immigration to develop a new immigration stream for temporary residents in 120 days. Experts think this is a very good idea, because those who are already in Canada adapt more easily, they usually already have work or study experience.

In addition, on June 10, Canada signed U.S. President Joe Biden's Declaration on Migration and Protection unveiled at the Summit of the Americas. This means that Canada will take in at least 50,000 seasonal agricultural workers from Central and South America and give permanent residency to 4,000 refugees from there by 2028.

The federal government has set a target to admit 431,645 immigrants in 2022. Immigration Secretary Sean Fraser said processing applications is ahead of schedule despite the pandemic and the need to admit thousands of Ukrainians and Afghans over the plan. Last week, the number of people receiving permanent residency this year reached 200,000. The time to obtain citizenship or a work permit has also decreased in recent months, according to the minister.
