Canada welcomed more than 108,000 new residents in the first quarter of 2022

Since the beginning of 2022, Immigration Canada has made 147,000 permanent resident decisions. This is twice as many as during the same period in 2021. Looking at the January data, it is clear that the Department of Immigration has accelerated its review of applications and is determined to meet the immigration plan for 2022.

In parallel with processing applications for permanent residency, the Department of Immigration receives and processes applications from Ukrainians 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. As of April 1, 2022, more than 65,000 Ukrainians had applied for a Canadian visa under the special immigration program. About 12,000 people were approved.

Immigration Minister Sean Fraser expressed concern about welcoming Ukrainians into the private homes of concerned Canadians. In his opinion, this is risky for both Ukrainians and Canadians. There have already been documented and reported in the press episodes of fraud — for example, from a woman with a child took an advance payment of $ 2,000 CAD for a meeting at the airport and temporary housing, but on the day of arrival, the scammer stopped contacting.

At the moment there is no way to centrally check those Canadians who offer their homes, even whether or not they have a criminal record. The search for the best way to quickly check is ongoing, the minister assured.
