New immigration program applications open
Specialists in certain professions can apply.
Tomorrow, January 15, the province of Saskatchewan will begin accepting applications under a new pilot immigration program for specialists with in-demand skills.
Workers in the following occupations may obtain permanent residency:
- professions in processing, manufacturing, and recycling;
- food and beverage processing workers;
- workers in metal production;
- industrial painters;
- machine assemblers and inspectors;
- Food and beverage processing operators;
- sawmill operators;
- machining and forging machines;
- farm workers;
- Construction assistants and handymen;
- heavy equipment operators;
- truck drivers;
- workers in freight handling;
- maintenance workers, caretakers, and commandants;
- cleaners;
- counter workers, kitchen assistants;
- hotel front desk staff;
- waiters;
- care workers for the elderly and sick, housekeepers (family work is not suitable);
- other health professions;
- nurse assistants and orderlies;
- dispatchers;
- shippers and receivers.
To apply, you must have a job offer in one of the listed occupations and have at least 1 year of work experience in the past 3 years (or 6 months in Saskatchewan), pass a language test in English or French at level 4 or higher on the CLB scale and have at least a high school education. Truck drivers must additionally obtain a driving licence in Saskatchewan.
You should look for a job on the official provincial website. The province also holds occasional job fairs, in which employers look for suitable candidates with certain professions. Registration is now open for a job fair for health care workers.
