Businesses in Canada are short of specialists

Businesses in Canada are short of specialists

Employers attract employees with higher salaries, bonuses and flexible working hours.

The Business Development Bank of Canada recently released a study that 64% of businesses are understaffed. This was reflected in 731,900 job openings in the second quarter of 2021. Provinces such as Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia need the most employees.

According to Trevin Stratton, head of economic advice, those industries where employees have moved to remote work are recovering faster from the economic impact of COVID-19. These industries include businesses related to finance, insurance and real estate. Businesses related to food services, accommodation, transportation, recreation and tourism are just beginning to move towards recovery.

The highest number of job openings in Canada is in the following sectors:

Hospitality & Catering — 89,100 vacancies.

Reasons:

  1. Staff shortages have been exacerbated by the pandemic and an aging population.
  2. People don't want to go back to full-time work so they don't have to lose their Canadian emergency benefits payments.

This is a record level of staff shortages. Employment in this area is not expected to recover to pre-pandemic levels anytime soon.

Health care — 40,800 job openings in 2 years.

Causes:
. Many medical professionals are leaving their jobs because of the difficulty, stress and risk associated with working during a pandemic.

Manufacturing and construction — 65,900 and 62,600 vacancies respectively.

Reasons:
. According to Canadian business owners, limiting the number of temporary foreign employees that can be hired at one time.

Now entrepreneurs are seeking permission from the government to increase the number of foreign employees from 10% to 20% or 30%, depending on the company. In construction the number of vacancies is a record since 2015.

Retail Trade — 84,300 vacancies.

According to Statistics Canada, the most popular jobs in the field are vendors, storekeepers, clerks and order pickers.

Trucking & Logistics — 18,000 jobs.

Reasons:

  1. Pandemic.
  2. Shortage of foreign specialists.
  3. Difficult working conditions.

Experts note that the vacancy crisis in this area could affect other areas as well. After all work as a trucker links key economic sectors. Respectively, the unresolved issue of employees in this area will slow down the solution of problems in other areas.

However, it is worth understanding that the acute shortage of specialists and availability of vacancies does not guarantee that the employer will make a hiring decision in your favour. At least for this you must write a competent resume according to Canadian standards. With it in place, it's safe to say that 50% of success is yours.
