Immigration Future: The Only Way to a Prosperous Canada
What else was discussed during the virtual forum of immigration ministers.
The Forum of Ministers Responsible for Immigration (FMRI) held a virtual meeting to discuss the future of immigration in Canada. At the meeting, officials discussed in detail a long-term plan to create a more flexible immigration system.
While the pandemic has caused some disruptions in Canada's immigration system, those present noted an improvement in that situation and also discussed upcoming changes related to receiving new immigrants.
The assembled ministers reaffirmed their commitment to a relationship between federal, provincial and territorial immigration programs that supports timely and meaningful partnership and collaboration.
"Our ongoing collaboration, now further strengthened, promotes valuable initiatives that will help us support population growth and the existing immigration system," said Marco Mendicino, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship. "Together we can build a stronger and more inclusive Canada.
Immigration to Canada recently — what has changed?
The Canadian immigration authorities have introduced several incentives and innovations to improve the current system of admitting aliens. Virtual services have been created for applicants submitting immigration applications and some immigration programs have undergone changes.
As Marco Mendicino noted, the immigration system has played a critical role in Canada's overall response to the challenge posed by coronavirus infection. Immigration is what will continue to drive the country's economic recovery and prosperity. As noted in the forum, Canadian society is overwhelmingly strong in its support for immigration, and this is very welcome.
Immediate immigration plans
Participating ministers agreed to continue working together to ensure that all of the country's immigration programs complement each other, meet regional needs and support an inclusive and prosperous Canada. In the coming months, the immigration system will be working on many important points, including:
- shortening the processing time for immigration applications;
- regional distribution of immigrants;
- successful development provincial immigration;
- immigration outside Quebec for French-speaking foreigners;
- Increased cooperation on immigration policy, the development of immigration programs and ways for foreign nationals to obtain permanent residency in Canada;
- will work to support the vitality of Canadian communities and labour market needs.
