Census 2021: not a bad way to make money

Census 2021: not a bad way to make money

In 2021, Canada will have its 23rd census. Statistic Canada plans to hire 32,000 people to make it a success.

As early as May 2021, Canada will have its next population census, which takes place every five years. This is a great way to paint a portrait of the country's population, to study the needs of Canadians.

We have prepared detailed instructions on how to get temporary census work, how much you can earn and what duties you will have to do. The work will take place between March and July 2021.

Who is required:

All work will be carried out directly in the field and is related to data collection. To date, it is known that two positions are planned to be recruited: Counter and Team Leader.

The counters work part-time and the working hours will vary from region to region. However, it is known that most of their work will be in the evening and on weekends.

The wage for the counter position is $17.83 CAD per hour, plus working expenses. However, in some northern and just remote communities the wage will be $29.25 CAD per hour.

Responsibilities of the meter:

  • Collection of questionnaire data in households.
  • Recording addresses and writing messages inviting residents to fill out the questionnaire online.
  • Communication with respondents in person or by telephone.
  • Sending of completed questionnaires.

The Team Leader works full-time (40 hours per week), but most of the direct duties will be performed in the evenings and on weekends. As with the counters, the work schedule will depend on the region.

The salary for the supervisor position is $21.77 CAD per hour and in remote and northern regions is $31.25 CAD.

Responsibilities of the team leader:

  • Training, guiding and supervising a team of counters.
  • Monitor workflow and improve team productivity.
  • Communication with respondents in person or by telephone.
  • Collection and dispatch of completed questionnaires and other documents.

How to get a job:

In order to qualify for the 32,000 census staff, you must meet the following requirements:

  • you must be at least 18 years old;
  • you are a Canadian citizen or are eligible to work in Canada;
  • you are flexible and have the flexibility to work 20 to 40 hours per week.

Access to reliable internet and phone service will be a serious advantage.

To be hired, you will have to go through several stages of selection:

On the application form, you will be able to indicate which position you are applying for (there is an option to indicate both positions). Be prepared to list your three most recent jobs, the duties performed there, and two references from former employers. Even directors of volunteer or charitable organizations can serve as references.

  • Have an initial interview.

You will be contacted by Statistic Canada staff who will ask a number of clarifying questions.

  • Get tested.

You will receive an email with a "Personnel Screening, Consent and Authorization" form, which you will need to fill out and send to the specified email address.

Security staff will check candidates' criminal records and credit history and contact references.

  • If you're applying for the team leader position, you'll have another round of interviews waiting for you.

All screened candidates will then be included in a pool of qualified candidates and may be offered a position.

That said, Statistic Canada warns that in regions with large numbers of applicants, it may not be possible to reach everyone.

As a reminder, census jobs are temporary. In order to avoid problems with finding a part-time job in the future, we recommend taking a unique training course on how to find a permanent job in Canada.
