Jobs: A huge number of jobs have opened up in B.C.

The province wants to hire more than 25,000 people. The job is temporary but pays very well.

On October 24, 2020, British Columbians will elect members of the Legislative Assembly. The province needs election workers to serve this election.

Sure, this job will be short-term, but it has some big perks:

— vacancies are open across the province;

— A large number of people are required — about 25 thousand;

— pay a higher rate (because of COVID-19).

So if you are already in B.C. and want to make a little extra money, this option may well suit you.

There are certain difficulties in this work. The working day for election officials is quite long, starting at 14 hours: it begins at 6:30 a.m. with setting up the polling station and ends with the counting of ballots at around 9:30 p.m. In addition, election officials must be willing to sit or stand for long periods of time.

General experience and skills to be possessed by candidates for the position:

— Basic English language and literacy skills; ability to speak another language is an advantage;

— the ability to be impartial;

— effective communication and customer service skills; ability to serve voters with disabilities;

— quick learner; ability to perform repetitive tasks;

— basic arithmetic skills; analytical skills; special attention to detail;

— ability to follow directions and written instructions.

Note also that election officials must:

— be at least 15 years old;

have the legal right to work in British Columbia;

have a social security number.

All election commission staff should wear masks at all times while working. Some election officials must also wear a protective mask. If you are unwilling or unable to wear a mask at all times, you should not accept employment as an election official.

Pre-training is also mandatory, but all training participants will be compensated $48 CAD. Compensation for online training is $16 CAD. But the salary level can be different.

Types of jobs and salaries:

voting observer: $490 CAD per day (about 16 hours);

voting employee: $320 CAD per day (about 15 hours);

information staff: $288 CAD per day (about 14 hours).

You can apply for a job in any constituency within a reasonable distance of your home. However, you can only work in one district.

You can download the application form here, and once you have filled it out, send it to one of the addresses (depending on where you want to work).
