The Gretna-Rhineland-Altona-Plum-Coulee region, home to about 11,500 people, is located near the U.S. border, 100 km southwest of Winnipeg, the capital of Manitoba.
Rhineland was originally a rural municipality. In 2015, it was merged with the municipalities of Gretna and Plum Coulee. Now the municipality is considered one region, which is called Gretna-Rhineland-Altona-Plum-Coulee, or Altona/Rhineland in short, as it also surrounds the town of Altona.

The town of Altona and the municipality of Rhineland offer a wide range of educational programs, facilities, and services. Altona has four schools that offer education from kindergarten to grade 12. There are also non-public educational institutions for children in the town.
There are no higher education institutions in the region, but nearby provincial universities, including Red River College, the University of Manitoba, and the University of Winnipeg, provide opportunities for students to study remotely.

Altona/Rhineland provides a full range of health services and programs. The region offers immunization services, support for families with newborns, prevention and wellness counseling, and family counseling. Alternative medicine services are also available, including massage therapists, homeopathists, and extensive chiropractic services. There is also a dental clinic in Altona.
Transport
The Manitoba Highway, the main north-south route to the U.S. border, runs through the region. It starts in Gretna and is located on the eastern border of Altona. There is also an airport near the town.
Entertainment
Even though Altona/Rhineland is a small and sparsely populated region, you will not get bored. There are many events taking place there all year round.
For example, every year on the last Friday of November, residents gather to light the Christmas tree and garlands. This is how Altona marks the beginning of the Christmas season. People gather around a large bonfire and roast hot dogs, then drink hot chocolate and eat cookies. The town has an exhibition centre, an aquatic centre, an ice arena, an art gallery, and a sculpture garden, there are walking trails, a skatepark, and many sports fields.
Manitoba is the largest producer of sunflowers in Canada. Every year people from all over the province come to Altona for the provincial sunflower festival, which has been held since 1964.
