You can get $5,600 for energy-efficient home repairs in Canada
The new program allows property owners to receive compensation from the government.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Natural Resources Minister Seamus O'Regan have announced the launch of a new program that offers residents grants of up to $5,600 CAD for energy-efficient home repairs.
The program, called Canada Greener Homes Grants, will provide about $2.6 million CAD over seven years. It will help homeowners upgrade heaters, install solar panels, and replace doors and windows.
"Any effort to keep the air clean is important to the country," said Justin Trudeau. — We know not everyone can afford these repairs, so our government is making them more affordable."
700,000 Canadian families will receive grants of up to $5,000 CAD for home improvements and another $600 CAD for an energy assessment. The program is part of a government initiative to achieve zero greenhouse gas emissions in the country by 2050. Right now, private homes and buildings in Canada account for 18% of all emissions.
Terms and conditions
Property owners (where the home must be their primary residence), as well as Indigenous governments and organizations and housing authorities, can participate in the programme.
Grants apply to the following homes:
- detached private houses;
- semi-detached houses;
- townhouses;
- row houses;
- all-season cottages;
- mobile homes on permanent foundations;
- moored floating houses;
- residential parts of buildings of mixed use;
- small apartment buildings.
Details of the requirements for applicants and the grant process are described on the government website.
Application and process
Applications are accepted online and at 1-833-674-8282 and 1 800-465-7735.
First, a certified consultant will evaluate the home and determine how it can be upgraded. The owner must do at least one of the recommended upgrades. Upon completion, the completed work will be evaluated and the applicant will then be compensated.

- reducing greenhouse gas emissions and preventing climate change.
In addition to the grants, the Government of Canada has announced that a program will be launched this summer that will offer homeowners the opportunity to receive an interest-free loan of up to $40,000 CAD for major home repairs.
