More than a third of young Canadians do not plan to have children
Many Gen Z and millennial Canadians are supporters of the Childfree ideology.
According to a new survey by Statistics Canada, more than a third of Canadians aged 15 to 49 have no intention of having children.
Over the past decade, the average number of children per Canadian woman has steadily decreased.
The main stressors that make people give up having children, respondents said study, credit and a desire to live a life where work would not take up most of their time.
"First I want to make sure I'm okay and have paid off all my debts before I even think about having kids. But I have no idea how long that will take," the Canadian students said.
Another stressor for the new generation of Canadians is today's inflation, which makes many young people feel that they will never be able to afford to start a family at all.
"We might not even get a chance to have a baby because of how expensive everything is now," they say.
Younger generations of Canadians are now facing financial problems such as rising interest rates and home prices, and this is causing them to give up on the idea of having a child.
Everything is getting more expensive, and this is clearly a long-term trend that will continue to lower and lower the birth rate," experts assure us.
But it's not just the high cost of living. This trend began even before the pandemic and high inflation. It is becoming increasingly obvious why new generations do not tend to buy houses while they are young, as they used to.

A trend with the childfree movement started on TikTok: people around the world are sharing their stories under the hashtag #childfreemovement and telling why they continue to be childfree.
"Childfree movement is important because they help get rid of social discrimination against childless people, traditionally condemned by society. Many people are now beginning to understand that parenthood is a choice, not an obligation," says one of them.
