Canada presents major music awards

The Weekend is once again among the Juno Award winners, with new music records to its credit.

The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, better known as the Juno Awards, held this year's ceremony. It took place last Saturday in Edmonton, Alberta. More than 40 awards were presented to Canadian performers for outstanding musical achievements of the year.

The Weekend, a distinctive and recognized musician, took home multiple awards. This year's ceremony turned out to be truly memorable: he picked up awards in four categories. He won artist of the year, songwriter of the year, pop album of the year, and single of the year. He now has 21 wins to his credit and this year he's even surpassed Celine Dion. The illustrious Canadian has won 20 awards in her career.

Country singer Tenille Townes won the first award of the evening. Her album Masquerades was voted best of the year. Tenille recalls the first time she attended the Juno Awards was 19 years ago as an audience member wishing she could one day climb the coveted stage. Today she's 29. "I just dreamed of how cool it could be to be a part of the show someday," she told CBC News.

The award for Contemporary Indigenous artist or group of the year was presented to the group Digging Roots, the 2010 winner. Previously the group consisted of a parental duo now joined by their son.

The band Alexisonfire returned to the big stage after a long hiatus. They released their last album in 2009 and now, in 2022, they are back with a new and even more creative piece of work that has been appreciated by industry professionals.

14-year-old musician Kairo McLean won the reggae recording of the year for the second year in a row and that is tremendously inspiring. The musician is already being talked about as a child prodigy who's just begun his ascent to the musical Olympus.

The Canadian music scene showcases a diversity of genres and forms year after year creating sensations and pushing the boundaries of music. Years from now, those who just begin with their first steps will be inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. This year the legendary band Nickelback joined the memorable club.
