Canada opens immigration center in Romania

The first such large office in Europe.

With immigration rates steadily increasing, Canada has decided to expand its presence abroad. Immigration Minister Marc Miller announced the opening of a new global operations center in Romania.

The new center will be located at the Canadian Embassy in Bucharest. It will employ 20 new staff members, both Canadian and local.

"Immigration is crucial to Canada’s economic growth and prosperity. Improving immigration processing capacity and client service is key to success in the global search for talent. I am glad that we are expanding our worldwide presence by opening a second global operations centre. This new centre will help support our goal of bringing people to Canada—whether to visit, study, work or stay permanently—and doing it faster," commented Miller on the opening of the center.

The Immigration Department's office in Europe will be the second such operations center outside of Canada — the first was opened in March of this year in Philippines in Manila. It has already achieved significant success, processing more than 150,000 residence permit applications from applicants in the Philippines, Nigeria and Bangladesh.

These centers:

  • complement Canada's application processing network;
  • extend the working day across multiple time zones;
  • help improve the overall capacity of the Department of Immigration for the benefit of applicants.

Under the Immigration Plan 2024-2026, the Government of Canada maintains its goal of 485,000 new permanent residents by 2024 and plans to increase that to 500,000 in 2025. For 2022, the Department of Immigration processed about 5.2 million applications for permanent residence, temporary residence and citizenship.

Immigration accounts for nearly 100% of Canada's labor force growth and is projected to account for 100% of Canada's total population growth by 2032. Immigrants make up 36% of doctors, 33% of business owners and 41% of engineers in Canada.
