In Ontario, a police officer apprehended a kangaroo.
After three days of "stinting" the animal is back home again.
The kangaroo that escaped from the Oshawa Zoo last week has finally been caught. A police officer suffered minor injuries in the process of catching it. The animal ended up spending more than three days on the loose.
Durham Municipal Police said the marsupial animal was successfully captured around 6 a.m. Monday. It happened on Winchester Road in Oshawa, Ontario, in the same area where the kangaroo was first spotted on Friday.
Initial examination showed that the animal was not injured, but the zoo is still going to fully examine it. The police officer who made the arrest was slightly injured.
A female kangaroo escaped Thursday evening while being transported to a Quebec City zoo. The animal first attracted widespread attention when a video surfaced online showing it hopping along Winchester Road, about three kilometers south of the zoo early Friday morning. It was spotted several times in the area over the weekend, but despite the efforts of volunteers and Oshawa Zoo staff, it managed to avoid capture until Monday morning.
In Ontario, the regulation of roadside zoos is largely up to municipalities, and only half of them have regulations in place. After the kangaroo story ended, animal rights activists advocated for stricter regulations — to ensure the safety of both the animals and humans.
