Vancouver is canceling New Year

The official celebration will not take place for the fifth straight year.

The Vancouver New Year's Eve Society is saddened to announce that there will be no city wide celebration of the night of December 31-January 1 this year. The cancellation of the event is due to rising costs and a very difficult sponsorship market in the current economic climate.

The last time New Year's Eve was celebrated in downtown Vancouver was in 2018. In 2019, the organizers took a one-year pause due to organizational problems and relocation, and in 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic occurred. Since then, it has not been possible to resume the celebrations.

The community said they are actively working to secure the necessary funding and resources to bring back the city's favorite New Year's Eve celebration in the future — possibly as early as 2024.

The same organizer is responsible for the Concord Pacific Dragon Boat Festival, the Celebration of light, Four Fires Indigenous Racing Festival and the hosting of Pride.
