Record amount of opium seized in Vancouver - almost 200 kilograms

And this is the third large shipment intercepted in British Columbia in a month and a half.

In the Greater Vancouver district, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) seized a record 196 kg of opium. The illicit substance was found inside shipping containers and was the third major case of smuggling of the drug in British Columbia in the past month and a half.

Previously, on August 28, Tsawassen border guards, using their service dogs, discovered 46kg of opium hidden inside furniture that had arrived in the country. And on August 15, the Burnaby Container Examination reported the seizure of 150kg of opium hidden inside some steel equipment.

All data has been turned over to the Canadian Police for further investigation.

Nina Patel, Regional Director General of Canada Border Services Agency, expressed pride in her subordinates:

"Our Agency is proud to have prevented nearly 200 kg of opium from entering Canada. These seizures demonstrate the diligence and detection capabilities of our border services officers and the important role of our intelligence operations in keeping these harmful drugs out of our communities."

The Canada Border Services Agency operates under the Customs Act and the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. Its main purpose is to combat organized crime and smuggling, including drugs.
