Canadians will sleep better
The governmentof Canada is investing more than CAD 1 million in sleep research.
Sleep is the most important part of human health. Problems with sleep can lead to physical and psychological health problems and contribute to disease. Studies show that half of all adults in Canada have sleep problems. And the government understands that we need to fix the situation.
Last year, the Canadian government invested CAD 3.8 million to support two interdisciplinary research groups that are part of the Sleep Research Consortium to study sleep and sleep disorders. And this week, Canada Minister of Health Jean-Yves Duclos announced that these studies will receive an additional CAD 1.1 million investment. This funding will support another research group to join the Sleep Research Consortium.
The new group is led by Dr. Lianne Tomfohr-Madsen of the University of British Columbia. This research group will give special priority to issues related to insomnia, sleep health, and public health measures used in this area. The Lianne Tomfohr-Madsen team will study how people’s identities, location, and access to services affect their quality of sleep, and what factors protect and improve sleep. Researchers will work closely with people who have experienced inequalities in sleep health, including members of indigenous communities, to get answers to important questions about sleep health.
The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Mitacs and Eisai Limited are working with the Canadian government to support this research.
