Agriculture in danger
Farmers report lack of workers on Prince Edward Island.
During the last meeting in Charlottetown farmeres wxpressed rheir concerns about the lack of skilled workers. One of the farmers even had to ask his retired workers to help. To solve this problem, farmers suggest involving young people in agriculture by introducing a relevant subject in high school.
"People are getting farther and farther away from the rural communities and understanding what goes on in agriculture. And I think we got to close that gap with education," said David Francis, Francis Farms owner.
His son Brett agrees. He added that the best agricultural land is being used for housing developments, and farmers simply cannot compete with developers. Brett believes that the government should preserve land for agricultural purposes.
There is a labor shortage in other provinces as well. Canadian government is trying to solve this issue by attracting more immigrants.
