The number of temporary foreign workers in Quebec is growing
Labour Minister Jean Boulet assures that the growth will continue.
At a recent press conference, Boulet said the number of foreign workers in Quebec rose to 38,500 last year. By comparison, there were 23,300 in 2019.
The minister told reporters that this "significant" increase is the result of increased demand from the business community, which has had to deal with an increasing aging population and labor shortages.
Temporary foreign workers used to be associated exclusively with the agricultural sector, but these days they are hired for a wide range of jobs. Boulet said he expects the need for workers will only increase.
Boulet announced that the provincial workplace health and safety board is expanding its team to help an increasing number of foreign workers sort out their work rights. The minister also added that the council will increase its oversight of recruitment agencies.
