Support for internationally educated nurses in Canada
The Alberta government is creating more than 600 new seats for nurses and investing in a bursary for internationally educated nurses.
As part of the 2023 budget, the Alberta government is investing more than $15 million to train and support internationally educated nurses. That's how the province is making sure its health care system remains robust now and into the future.
Each year, $7.8 million will be allocated within the budget to provide uncompensated financial assistance to internationally educated nurses.
Eligible nurses will have access to $30,000 over five years to cover costs associated with the bridging program, training and living expenses. The bursary will be available for the academic year 2023-24.
Recipients of the bursary are required to complete a year in Alberta's nursing service for every $6,000 paid. In this way, the province's patients and its communities will benefit from the fact that more and more nurses are beginning their careers here.
An additional $7.3 million will be invested over the next three years, starting in the 2023-24 academic year, to create more than 600 new jobs for Registered Nurses (RNs) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) bridging and licensing programs.
