The process of recognition of foreign diplomas in Canada will accelerate

The Canadian government announced a competition for in-demand professionals with international diplomas.

In the wake of the pandemic, Canadian medicine is severely understaffed. On December 5, 2022, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Sean Fraser issued a call for proposals as part of the Foreign Diploma Recognition Program.

According to 2020 statistics, 47% of qualified medical professionals from abroad are unemployed or underemployed in non-healthcare-related fields.

Canada is in dire need of medical workers. Professionals with international diplomas will be able to enter the competition and then receive the necessary practice, support, and workplace.

It is planned to invest up to $90 million CAD in the projects. As part of the implementation, programs will be created to help foreigners remove barriers to obtaining the necessary Canadian experience in their specialities.

The implementation of the program includes:

  1. Simplification of the process of recognition of foreign diplomas.
  2. Providing work experience that is directly related to the intended field of work.
  3. Comprehensive support for project participants. For example, assistance with child care and reimbursement of transportation costs.
  4. Facilitating labour mobility between jurisdictions in Canada for medical workers.
  5. Design, test and implement diploma recognition systems with a focus on process optimization.
  6. Providing employment assistance, such as wage subsidies and mentoring, to help healthcare workers integrate into the Canadian labour market.

The country does not have enough doctors in narrow specialities, nurses, paramedics, therapists and medical laboratory technologists.

Carla Qualtrough stated: "I am proud to announce new investments to support internationally educated healthcare professionals who want to work in medicine. The new projects will help make our healthcare system one of the best in the world. We look forward to welcoming new professionals who are ready to contribute.

If you don't know where to start looking for a job, how to prepare your resume and documents, or which certificates to include, take a course specially designed by our experts for foreigners.

Half of the newcomers to Canada have a bachelor's degree. Even with their educational achievements, skilled workers face high unemployment rates.
