A new dress code comes into effect in the fall.

On Tuesday morning, the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) released new regulations that contain a host of changes regarding the appearance of military personnel. The document says the Canadian military's dress guidelines are nearly 50 years old and the policy is long overdue for a review.

A gender-neutral dress code is being introduced, which means that servicemen will be able to wear mixed uniforms. There will also be no need to shave the head during basic training, no restrictions on hair coloring and length (it must be tied up if it is below the shoulders), and long nails are allowed if they will not interfere with the performance of duties.

In addition, well-groomed and neat sideburns, beards, and mustaches are no longer prohibited, and facial tattoos are allowed as long as they are not associated with criminal activity and any form of discrimination.

"The changes will accommodate the diversity of all members of the military, removing barriers related to clothing choices and other aspects of professional appearance," according to the official CAF tweet.

The innovations come into effect in September; commanders at all levels will be tasked with monitoring personnel compliance with the rules.
