Renewing Health Insurance for Migrants in British Columbia

Renewing Health Insurance for Migrants in British Columbia

People awaiting a decision on their immigration status will continue to be treated at government expense.

British Columbia has announced an extension of public health insurance for foreigners whose work or study permits have expired at the fault of Immigration Canada. Temporary health coverage for such migrants was in effect in the province until April 30, 2022. As of May 1, it was extended.

During the pandemic, many immigrants found themselves in a difficult situation. They applied in time to renew their temporary residency status or obtain permanent residency, but because of slow work by officials they were not allowed to work, receive treatment at government expense, or leave the country. Some immigrants owed the state health care system huge money for them.

To qualify for a renewal of provincial health insurance, you must prove to officials that your application was submitted to Immigration Canada before your work or study permit expired. A receipt for the application fee or a printout from the Department of Immigration website proving that the application is active will do.
