Canada Suspends Adoption of Children from Ukraine
Because of the unstable situation in the region, consideration of new applications to adopt children from Ukraine will be suspended.
Canada has suspended adoptions of children from Ukraine due to the unstable situation in the region. The pause will not apply to adoption cases in which a decision has already been made.
"We continue to give priority to citizenship applications for children whose adoptions have already been properly processed under Ukrainian law," Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada said in a statement.
According to the ministry, the measure was taken to ensure the safety of all children and the integrity of international adoption. He added that Canada's action was dictated by the recognized principle of international law that countries should renounce international adoption during armed conflicts or natural disasters.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada also pointed to a statement issued seven years ago by UNICEF. In it, the international organization also urged against speeding up the adoption process in situations of armed conflict or natural disaster, as it could lead to child trafficking and other abuses.
