Ukraine-Russia Conflict: Whose Side is Canada on?
Ministers of Canada and Ukraine met for talks.
On January 17, Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly met with Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmygal and Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Olga Stefanishina in Kyiv.
Joly reiterated Canada's support for Ukraine's territorial integrity and condemned Russia's actions, including the military build-up around Ukraine and the annexation of Crimea. Joly praised Ukraine's progress in democratic reforms, and she and Shmygal expressed a desire to increase trade between the countries.
With Olga Stefanishina, the Canadian foreign minister discussed shared values such as gender equality and democracy. Joly also noted the unity of NATO member states in supporting Ukraine.
In addition, Minister Joly is planning to meet with Canadian soldiers who are conducting a training mission in support of the Ukrainian Security Forces and with ministers from other countries.
"The concentration of Russian troops and equipment in and around Ukraine threatens the security of all nearby states. These aggressive actions must be contained," commented Joly. — Canada will work with its foreign partners to maintain international order and protect the human rights and dignity of Ukrainians."
Since Crimea's annexation of Russia in 2014, Canada has imposed sanctions on more than 440 individuals and entities. In 2021, Ukraine asked Canada to support the country's decision to join NATO.
