One profession will make it easier to immigrate to Canada
The requirements for applying for a work permit have changed.
On September 10, the Government of Canada published new interim rules for professionals who work in graphic design for television and film projects and live productions. Until March 9, 2022, employers are exempt from obtaining a labour market impact assessment (LMIA) when hiring these workers.
LMIAs require an employer to prove that they can't find a suitable employee who is a Canadian citizen or resident and to pay a fee. Without the LMIA, it will be easier for companies to hire designers and, in turn, make it easier for designers to obtain work permits in Canada.
The new requirements apply to those applying for a work permit after September 10, 2021, or renewing their current permit after that date. Designers can participate in any phase of the project: pre-production, production or post-production. A letter from the employer stating:
- information about the television programmes or film productions on which the designer is working;
- confirmation that the work of the hired specialist is necessary for the project;
- salary (should not be lower than the average in the province where the designer will work);
- confirmation that the company may qualify for tax incentives or project financing.

The film industry plays a major role in the country's economy, and the new measures are designed to speed up the industry's recovery from the crisis caused by the pandemic.
