Statistics Canada has released details of occupations that have become in demand because of the pandemic.
The pandemic has had a multifaceted impact on employment in Canada. Some sectors of the economy have been hit the hardest, with a dramatic drop in the number of jobs. But there are also some areas where job openings have increased.
A statistical study of the labour market in Prince Edward Island identified the following occupations among the most in-demand:
- Housing and renovation managers;
- managers in agriculture;
- administrative staff;
- information systems analysts and consultants;
- programmers and interactive media developers;
- User Support technicians;
- diploma nurses and registered psychiatric nurses;
- dental hygienists and dental therapists;
- licensed nurses;
- nurses, nurses and patient care assistants;
- social workers;
- social and community workers;
- Home care workers, housekeepers and related occupations;
- assistants to elementary and secondary school teachers;
- truck drivers;
- delivery and courier drivers;
- farm workers;
- harvest workers.
The pandemic has increased demand on the labour market in areas that not only stayed afloat during the crisis, but also gained additional development. For example, more administrative staff were needed to maintain new health and safety protocols related to coronavirus restrictions. Information systems analysts and consultants have seen an increase in requests to move businesses online. The healthcare sector has been hit hardest by the impact of the pandemic. The construction industry is also expected to see more job openings due to the influx of immigrants.
