Canadian city second safest in the world
Despite an increase in crime amid the lockdown last year, the metropolis has distinguished itself with a high safety record.
British media company The Economist Group in its weekly magazine has published a list of the safest cities in the world for 2021. One of the Canadian megacities, Toronto, got into the top ten, taking a respectable second place. The first line went to Copenhagen in Denmark.
Cities were selected based on 76 factors, including digital technology, infrastructure, personal and environmental safety, and health threats, particularly important against the backdrop of the ongoing pandemic. In total, the company evaluated 60 cities.
Toronto has improved markedly since the last study in 2019, scoring 82.2 out of 100, with Copenhagen beating it by just 0.2 points with a score of 82.4. Researchers praised Toronto's sustainability plan, waste management system and other environmental-related indicators, as well as infrastructure safety, pedestrian friendliness, reliability of the public transport system and maintenance of the road network.
The top 10 safest cities in the world are as follows
- Copenhagen, Denmark;
- Toronto, Canada;
