Ontario, Quebec and Manitoba open their borders
Non-essential travel between provinces has been banned since April.
On Wednesday, June 16, at 12:01 a.m., Ontario and Quebec will open their borders to all travel. It also means that Quebec's requirements for a mandatory 14-day self-exclusion for anyone returning from Ontario will no longer apply.
Prior to Wednesday, travellers coming to Ontario for purposes other than work, health care, transporting goods and exercising Indigenous treaty rights could not cross the provincial border.
"I'm pleased to learn that travel restrictions between Ontario and Quebec will be lifted this Wednesday," Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson wrote on Twitter. In an interview, he said he saw no evidence that such a strict travel restriction helped prevent infections.
"After months of wasting police resources on traffic control, our two highly integrated economic regions will benefit greatly from this decision," Watson added.
