$1 million for vaccinations
One province is having a big raffle for those who have been vaccinated against COVID.
Another Canadian province has decided to motivate people to get vaccinated with cash prizes. Alberta residents over the age of 18 who receive at least one dose of the vaccine can enter a raffle. The prize is $1 million CAD.
Registration for the drawing will close after 70% of residents who fit the criteria have had their first vaccination. And the winner will be announced when Alberta's third phase of the discontinuation plan goes into effect.
Jason Kenney, provincial premier, said the lottery will help make the final push to vaccinate residents. He said Alberta's population has responded positively to the immunization program, but if anyone is still looking for a reason to sign up for vaccination, the government is ready to give it a go.
The first dose of the vaccine has already been given to 68.5% of people over 18 years of age in Alberta. 19.2% of residents have been vaccinated with two doses. The province is projected to reach a 70% immunization rate by this Friday, June 18. After that, we will only have to wait two weeks before moving to the third phase of withdrawal, when all restrictions will be lifted.
To enter the lottery, residents must provide proof that they have been vaccinated. Both those who have already received the vaccine and those who will do so after the lottery has been announced can participate.
The province of Manitoba launched a raffle for the vaccinated last week. It will draw 14 prizes of $100,000 CAD for residents 18 years old and 20 scholarships of $25,000 CAD for teens 12 to 17 years old.
