Canada aims to make public transport greener
The country will upgrade buses as part of a plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Canada continues to meet its green goals. The government intends not only to improve the country's environmental situation, but also to create new jobs and increase the share of the middle class, as well as become a world leader in low— and zero-emission vehicles, products and technologies.
According to the government, ensuring Canadians have access to green and affordable transportation is one of the key elements of Canada's climate change plan. The country has set a goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40 per cent by 2030 and to zero by 2050.
François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, announced a $15 million CAD investment in Nova Bus' public transport modernization project, which will help increase the number of electric and battery-powered buses and develop other types of eco-friendly buses.
Nova Bus is a division of the Volvo Group, an international automotive and industrial equipment manufacturer. Volvo's Canadian headquarters are located in Saint-Estache, in the province of Quebec.
"We are very proud to partner with the Canadian government to contribute to the innovative zero-emission vehicle sector and help Canada meet its sustainability and green economy goals," said Volvo CEO Martin Lundstedt.
In addition to shifting to greener modes of public transport, the project involves the creation of 1,118 high-paying, full-time jobs, and is also designed to help make Canada's transportation industry one of the most competitive in the world for electric buses and Nova Bus a leader in electric transportation.
As part of the Environmental Plan, the Government of Canada is also offering residents cash grants for energy-efficient repairs to their homes.
