Is there any point in vaccination if the virus keeps spreading?
A new COVID-19 outbreak has been announced at Cottonwoods Care Centre in inland British Columbia, where staff and residents have already been vaccinated.
The BC Columia Centre for Disease Control confirmed on its website that 82% of residents had been vaccinated as of February 15.
In a live press conference, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said vaccination does not mean transmission will be halted and that precautions should remain in place for seniors and nursing homes.
"There is a chance of infection even when people around are fully vaccinated," she said. — The disease has a milder form and is not transmitted as intensely, so we don't see explosive outbreaks."
It is known that 2 employees and 10 residents of the health facility tested positive for coronavirus. Most interestingly, some cases were detected among those who received two doses of the vaccine.
This reminds us that while we are confident that the vaccine is very effective and prevents serious illness and death, it does not necessarily mean that transmission of the virus will be stopped completely.
So far, 333,327 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in British Columbia. And since the pandemic began, 1,391 residents have died because of the coronavirus.
