Canadian ministers speak on the occasion of International Migrants Day

Officials emphasized the importance of newcomers to Canada.

Immigration Minister Marc Miller, Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly and International Development Minister Ahmed Hussen issued a statement on International Migrants Day on Dec. 18. They recalled that newcomers — both economic migrants and refugees — play an important role in shaping Canada. They enrich society and contribute to the country's long-term prosperity.

The ministers say the holiday is an extra reason to recognize the reality of the dangers and difficulties of migration. By these, Miller, Joly and Hussen mean the problems people leave for Canada — crises and wars — and the difficulties they face on the way — human trafficking, violence and even death.

"As a champion of the Global Compact for Migration, Canada works with other countries and organizations to promote safe, orderly and regular migration. We continue to encourage international partners to put in place regular migration and protection pathways, and we also support them in their efforts to settle and integrate newcomers," the statement said.

Among the achievements of the state in this field, the ministers noted:

  • speech at the recent Global Forum on Refugees, where Canada made many commitments;
  • allocating CA$ 75 million over 6 years to support capacity building projects in the Americas;
  • starting a humanitarian route from Central and South America;
  • Support for the Los Angeles Declaration on Migration and Protection.

The officials concluded by calling on all Canadians to join in their congratulations, to express solidarity with migrants, to celebrate their invaluable social and economic contributions, and to recognize their courage and resilience in the face of great hardship.
