New language test to launch later than expected

The Department of Immigration has postponed the adoption of an important IELTS competitor.

Everyone who wants to immigrate to Canada needs to know at least one of the two official languages of the country. The level of proficiency is confirmed by one of the language tests approved by the Ministry of Immigration. The most popular of these has been IELTS for many years. However, some time ago, Marc Miller promised that Canada will start accepting Pearson PTE results — specifically PTE Core — from the end of 2023.

And now, 2023 is almost over, and instead of announcing a launch, the Department of Immigration is reporting a postponement. For now, the department promises to accept PTE Core results beginning in early 2024. Miller isn't giving any more precise dates yet.

PTE Core is a refined version of PTE Essential, we wrote more about this test and how it is better than IELTS in a separate article. In short, it is designed almost specifically for those who want to get a permanent residence or work permit in Canada.

Moreover, another language test developed by Pearson PLC — PTE Academic — is already successfully accepted by IRCC. However, it is suitable for those who need to prove their knowledge of the language for their studies. There are currently only six such tests: IELTS General, IELTS Academic, PTE Academic, TOEFEL, CAEL and CELPIP.

And to immigrate to Canada, you are now still required to pass one of two English proficiency tests approved by the Ministry: IELTS General Training or CELPIP General Test.

On our website you can roughly estimate your level by taking the English or French proficiency test.
