Earthquake on the west coast of Canada
But Canadians aren't intimidated by that.
A magnitude 5.9 earthquake was recorded on the ocean floor off the coast of Vancouver Island Sunday morning. Initially, the earthquake was registered with a magnitude of 4.2 — shortly before 3 a.m. local time. And an hour and a half later, the quake's strength reached 5.5 and then 5.9 on the Richter scale. Around 8:20 a.m., an earthquake of magnitude 4 also struck the area.
It occurred about 206 kilometers west of the municipality of Port Hardy at a depth of about 10 kilometers. Canadian authorities say the quake did not cause any damage — nor could it. A tsunami is also not expected.
Meanwhile, the country's east coast faced far more serious vagaries of nature. Atlantic Canada has been hit by Hurricane Lee. Authorities have urged residents of provinces at risk to stay indoors if possible and take all possible safety precautions.
