Canada has taken up the protection of young people on the Internet
The government is investing in youth Internet safety projects in the province of Prince Edward Island.
Canada believes that young people should feel safe — both in real life and online. Young people generally rate their experiences with the Internet as positive. However, cyberbullying is still a problem, and it is more serious than it may seem at first glance. Approximately 30% of young people report having experienced cyberbullying. Girls and young members of the 2SLGBTQIA community are disproportionately affected. The consequences of cyberbullying can be devastating, so the Government of Canada believes it is important to take steps to keep young people safe online.
Marco Mendicino — Minister of Public Safety — announced federal support to combat cyberbullying and ensure the internet safety of youth in Prince Edward Island. Public Safety Canada is investing CAD 634,900 of federal funding through the Crime Prevention Action Fund (CPAF) over five years to support the Cyberbullying Trauma-Informed Intervention Project.
"The impact of cyberbullying goes far beyond the online world. That’s why we’re supporting projects that take direct aim at it, and keep young Canadians safe online. These projects both address the scourge of cyberbullying, and also build a society that is more accepting and inclusive for all," Mendicino said in the announcement.
The funds will help Community Legal Information, in collaboration with community organizations and the Government of Prince Edward Island, to provide education, training and activities to combat online bullying. The project will be delivered to junior high schools and community centers across the province. It will target vulnerable and disadvantaged groups, including Indigenous youth, young people in the 2SLGBTQIA community and youth with intellectual disabilities.
By supporting evidence-based initiatives that prevent crime, CPAF is a critical part of the National Crime Prevention Strategy. It funds programs that support young people at risk of becoming victims of crime and help them succeed in life.
