The Internet is not a luxury but a necessity

The Government of Canada and Ontario will invest more than CAD 70 million to bring Internet access to rural areas of the province.

Canada's leadership believes that everyone in the country should have access to high-speed Internet. To ensure this, Canada's Connectivity Strategy has been developed. Its goal is to give all Canadians access to the Internet at a minimum speed of 50 Mbit/sec download and 10 Mbit/sec upload. It is planned that by 2026, 98 percent of Canadians will have high-speed Internet access. By 2030, 100 percent of Canadians will have access to the World Wide Web.

In addition to the national government's plans, the provinces have similar strategies. In Ontario, for example, it is planned to bring the Internet to every community by the end of 2025. And now achieving that goal is closer than ever. The governments of Canada and Ontario are taking decisive steps to bring the Internet to remote communities in the province.

Canadian Minister of Rural Economic Development Goody Hutchings, Ontario’s Minister of Infrastructure Kinga Surma and Member of Provincial Parliament for Carleton Goldie Gamari announced that the federal government will work with the Ontario government to provide more than CAD 71 million to Bell Canada and Cogeco to bring high-speed internet to more than 22,000 homes in 74 rural areas in eastern Ontario.

This project became possible as part of a national and provincial government partnership announced in late July 2021. This partnership (totaling more than CAD 1.2 billion) aims to create broadband projects that will give more than 280,000 homes in Ontario access to high-speed Internet.
