An important step in the development of Canadian medicine

The Government will fund research on COVID-19 treatment for people with organ transplants.

The Canadian government understands the incredible importance of transplantation for people in need of organ transplants. Those who have had organ transplants need special medical supervision. There are about 40,000 transplant recipients in Canada who are at risk of experiencing the severe effects of COVID-19. This may be caused by immunosuppression, an inadequate immune response to the vaccine, and the presence of chronic diseases.

Minister of Health Jean-Yves Duclos announced that the University of Alberta will receive CAD 1.8 million over three years. These funds are to be used to develop the Canadian Donation and Transplantation Research Program (CDTRP), specifically to study problems that may arise in the lives of transplant recipients with COVID-19 or after the disease.

As part of the initiative, the University of Alberta will collaborate with researchers, clinicians, patients, and their families across Canada. The goal of the research is to increase understanding of what transplant recipients who survive the coronavirus face. In-depth research will include assessing whether early therapy is safe and effective for transplant patients who have been severely affected by COVID-19, identifying treatment options, examining the impact of COVID-19 on the psychological well-being of patients and their families, and determining the value of new and existing therapies while considering their economic impact on the patient. The government expects that this initiative will improve the healthcare system and help transplant recipients across the country.
