An organization that supports victims and survivors of violent crime receives government support
Protective organizations and the government of Manitoba are working together to help their residents.
The Manitoba government is providing $200,000 in new funding to assist with programs and services offered through "Candace House". That was announced April 17 by Manitoba Justice Minister Kelvin Goertzen.
"Candace House" is a first-of-its-kind, charitable nonprofit organization in Canada that provides a safe and comforting refuge during the day for victims and survivors of crime, such as families who have lost a loved one due to violence.
We know how integral Candace House is in helping people in their healing journeys. The direct emotional and practical support and services that are offered benefit victims and survivors. The Department of Justice is pleased to participate in delivering victim support alongside the staff of Candace House," said Goertzen.
In 1984 Wilma and Cliff Derksen lost their daughter. In an effort to deal with their grief, they formed an organization named after her. Since then, "Candace House" has been active in helping victims of violence and their families.
In the short time that we’ve been open, Candace House has supported over 1,000 family members as they navigate the justice system, and the need continues to grow,” said Cecilly Hildebrand, executive director, Candace House. “Our ‘Honouring Courage’ campaign seeks to raise $1 million to increase our footprint and our services. To that end, we are thrilled with the $200,000 grant from the Manitoba government. These funds will go a long way in expanding the wraparound support we are able to provide to families impacted by homicide
"Candace House" first helped an abused family in 2018. Since then, this unique facility has continued to offer assistance to those in need. Candace House staff and volunteers also provide court accompaniment, information related to the justice system, emotional and practical support, and partnerships with various organizations.
