How Canada saves its citizens

Global Affairs Canada promised to release imprisoned Canadians from Syria.

Each of us has heard stories of governments heroically rescuing their citizens from some of the world's hottest spots. Many countries, including Canada, have been rescuing people from conflict zones for years. Now there is such a situation in Syria.

More and more terrorist groups are recruiting citizens from prosperous countries. Often after the deaths of such criminals, their wives and children are placed in detention, where they are held for years in very harsh conditions. The UN has repeatedly called on governments to solve this issue.

Now Canadian government is trying to rescue such families. Recently it brought back four children and ten women who had been held in Al Roj camp, where are held about 70,000 people of various nationalities.

"The safety and security of Canadians, both at home and abroad, is our utmost priority. Amidst reports of deteriorating conditions in the camps in northeastern Syria, we have been particularly concerned about the health and wellbeing of Canadian children," Global Affairs Canada said.

Western countries are trying to abandon such an initiative because of possible terrorist attacks on their territories. However, they still decide to repatriate their citizens experiencing a strong pressure from civil society organizations. Each case is considered individually.

Canada has been returning its citizens back home for years. The current rescue operation is known as "BOLOH" — Bring Our Loved Ones Home.
