Investment in Canada's fresh springs will be record-breaking.

During U.S. President Joe Biden's visit to Ottawa, Canadian federal government announced it would spend CAD 420 million to clean up and restore the Great Lakes, the largest Canada's investment in this field.

Commitments announced by the government during President Biden's visit and in the recent budget bring the federal government's total investment to $750 million. "It brings us very close to our commitment to invest CAD 1 billion", said Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault.

During the 2021 election campaign, the Liberal Party announced that it would invest more than CAD 1 billio over the next 10 years to protect and restore freshwater bodies, including rivers, large lakes and the Great Lakes.

Last week Minister of Finance Chrystia Freeland unveiled a budget for the next fiscal year. It calls for CAD 650 million over 10 years for the Fraser River, the Mackenzie River, Lake Winnipeg, the Lake of the Woods, Lake Simcoe, the St. Lawrence River and the Great Lakes.

Today freshwater sources suffer environmental threats: plastic pollution, metals, and everyday trash. Flora and fauna and all the people who live near lakes and rivers are also under threat. Therefore, fundings will be used for cleanup work, water contamination analysis and other procedures.
