Canada extends urgent visas for Ukrainians
The government announced further support of Ukrainian citizens.
The government extended the CUAET program (Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel) until July 15, 2023. Previously, thousands of Ukrainians were in a state of limbo, unsure whether they would have a chance to apply for the program this spring. Ukrainians who already have a CUAET visa can come to Canada till March 31, 2024, which is also the deadline for extending an emergency visa for those who are already in the country.
Under CUAET program Ukrainians have the opportunity to quickly enter the country and obtain a work permit or to study for up to three years. Canada offers them one-time financial support as well.
“We continue working to provide Ukrainians with a temporary safe haven and the vital settlement services and supports they need to thrive in communities across Canada. Canada will continue to stand with the people of Ukraine,” Sean Fraser said, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship.
Anyone holding a CUAET visa will have until March 31, 2024, to travel to Canada under the special measures.
When asked whether Canada would extend the program if the conflict wasn't over this year, Fraser said the government would "monitor the situation closely" and see what happens in the future.
