Canadians will get free trees to plant
In an effort to increase Vancouver's natural forest canopy, Vancouver Park Board is donating 250 trees to residents in canopy-deficient areas.
Residents of such neighborhoods can register and receive a free tree to plant on their property.
The pilot of a program called "Branch Out" is aimed at creating a healthier urban forest and maintaining what is known as climate justice.
"Today's climate change is creating an increasingly challenging environment for people and trees in Vancouver," says one city park manager. — Planting trees on their property and taking care of them is one of the most important things ordinary citizens can do to help support the environment of the communities in which they live and withstand extreme weather factors. After all, trees bring shade in the heat and provide protection from the wind in the winter."
Beginning February 14, residents of these Vancouver neighbourhoods can register on the project website and get their own tree. The Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation is offering a selection of trees suitable to the local climate and soil, namely lilac, plum tree, fig tree, spruce and ginkgo.
