The most powerful storm in Canada. Consequences
For several days now, Canada has been battling bad weather: severe frost, winds, and snowfalls. What did Canada's extreme winter bring?
On Christmas Eve, many Canadians prefer to travel to warmer climes, stroll through holiday fairs and visit family and friends. But not in 2022. The weather has forced many to cancel plans, and some have been caught up in surprising and sometimes dangerous stories.
- More than 100 people could not get home because of the storm. They had to spend the night in the store. Walmart, a store in southwestern Ontario, sheltered all the customers for the night. All roads were closed, so no one ventured out of the store. Sleeping bags, blankets, hot meals and music were provided for visitors.
- Hundreds of flights to Quebec, Victoria and Vancouver were cancelled. This included international flights. The airlines could not be reached. The same was true for bus routes.
- Icy roads triggered an accident. On Christmas Eve, a bus overturned in British Columbia: Four people died and 53 were taken to hospital. At the time of the accident, there was ice and snow on the road surface, as well as rain and hail.
- In the provinces of Ontario and Quebec, people were left without light and heat.
- Numerous accidents on highways in Ontario. Services reported that more than 100 cars collided on the highway. Many highways were completely closed. But, fortunately, there were no fatalities: 2 people were taken to the hospital.
- Classes were cancelled in schools almost all over Canada.
- Many Canadians were stuck in Mexico because of flight cancellations. They were moved from one hotel to another, and some slept on the airport floor and in hotel lobbies. The situation caused a huge wave of outrage.
- In different parts of Canada, snowfall ranged from 29 cm to 40 cm, and temperatures in some provinces dropped to -40.
According to meteorologists, such extreme weather is not exactly typical for Canada. Environment Canada meteorologist Mitch Meredith said there have been several such storms over the past 20 years.
