International students will be able to work more in Canada

The Canadian government is both addressing the labour shortage and allowing students to earn more.

Great news for all international students in Canada! Minister of Immigration Sean Fraser announced the temporary lifting of restrictions on working while studying. Previously, international students were only allowed to work up to 20 hours per week, not counting holidays when they could work up to 40 hours.

From November 15, 2022, to December 31, 2023, students will be able to work full-time both during their studies and during holidays. The work restriction will be lifted also for those who have already applied for a study permit and will be in Canada during this period.

First of all, such a measure was adopted because of the acute shortage of workers in Canada, which has been going on for a long time. For students, it will help, firstly, to earn more money for everyday expenses, and secondly, to get more hours of work experience to apply for permanent residency and further permanent employment.

"By allowing international students to work more while they study, we can help ease pressing needs in many sectors across the country, while providing more opportunities for international students to gain valuable Canadian work experience and continue contributing to our short-term recovery and long-term prosperity," commented Sean Fraser.

According to the Canadian government, right now there are more than 500,000 students from abroad studying in the country, and many of them are willing to work more than 20 hours a week. But it's important that stopping studying or reducing hours of study will result in the loss of permission to work off-campus, so working should not negatively affect learning.

Also for students, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada is launching a project to automate the processing of study permit extensions. This will reduce processing time. Initially, only a small number of applications will be processed automatically, but the project will be expanded in the future.
