A new record of worker shortages in Canada

The number of vacancies grows every quarter.

Statistics Canada reported in its July 28 report that there were 1,005,700 unfilled positions in early May, a new record. The May 2021 figure was reportedly 42% lower than in 2022.

The largest contributor to this record was the health care sector, which is currently experiencing the worst crisis. The number of job openings is now reported to be nearly 91 percent higher than the pre-decline figure for the first few months of 2020.

Economists believe the situation will soon improve dramatically, but to do so it is necessary to raise wages and improve working conditions. The average hourly wage in 2022 increased by 3 percent and inflation by 5.8 percent, so the gap needs to narrow to attract workers.

The growth of wages, according to the forecasts of financiers, is expected in all sectors.
