Canadian province sets ambitious immigrant admission goals for 2022

Nova Scotia continues to invest in immigration initiatives to encourage economic growth.

Having welcomed 9,025 new residents in 2021, increasing the record by 19%, Nova Scotia has announced its intentions to increase the flow of immigrants in 2022.

Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has increased the number of nominees from the province to 5,340 and added 1,173 spots for the Atlantic immigration program, a 75% increase over 2021.

Moreover, it is reported that the provincial budget for 2022-2023 includes extraordinary investments aimed at population growth:

  • $1 million CAD for advertising campaigns to increase interest in the province;
  • $1.4 million CAD for services to accommodate new residents;
  • $895,000 CAD to pay for additional staff working with immigration services.

Also, the province has already admitted 500 Ukrainians under the CUAET program, a number that does not count toward the total count of new residents.

"Population growth is vital to our economic success," Jill Barser, Minister of Labour, Skills and Immigration, said on official Twitter, "We have been preparing for growth by working with employers, communities and adaptation organizations to welcome more people who will call Nova Scotia home.

It is worth noting that the upward trend in the number of potential immigrants is sweeping the country: the importance of immigration has increased many times over because of the lingering pandemic. That's why Canada's immigration plan increases the number of new residents every year: 431,645 in 2022, 447,055 in 2023, and 451,000 in 2024.
