Filipina Evangeline Cayanan and her daughter face deportation from Canada

Concerned Canadians are signing an online petition to protect an illegal Filipino citizen and her 6-year-old daughter from deportation.

In 2010, Evangeline Cayanan came to Canada as a temporary foreign worker (TFW). The woman worked in Ontario for a year before moving to Alberta. Cayanan claims she faced discrimination and harassment from employers at two jobs.

In addition, the Filipina claims that one of her employers accused her of stealing more than $5,000 CAD. A year later, however, the prosecutor's office halted the case, and the woman's lawyer claims that Cayanan was not even in the country at the time of the alleged theft.

Due to these events, the woman lost her work permit and was unable to apply for refugee status. In 2015, Cayanan gave birth to a daughter, who was granted Canadian citizenship under the law. The girl requires skilled nursing care due to her diagnosis of ADHD.

In 2017, Kayanan and many others campaigned for access to health care for McKenna Rose and other children of parents staying in Canada without legal status. For this, the woman received the Human Rights Award from the John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights.

On July 8, 2022, Evangeline and McKenna Rose Cayanan face deportation from the country. An attorney, volunteers, and concerned individuals are signing an online petition so that the woman and her daughter can avoid deportation and legalize their status in the country.
